The Old Charleston Jail was built in 1802 as a more permanent replacement for Magazine Street's earlier, more primitive jail structures. The new building remained in use until 1939 and held many notable prisoners while still in operation, including: 

• John and Lavinia Fisher, famous highway robbers of the early 19th century 
• Denmark Vesey, free Black carpenter who bravely organized a massive 1822 uprising among the city's enslaved people and was jailed and hanged in the aftermath 
• Pirates like the French poisoner Jacque Alexander Tardy 

The jail is said to be haunted by the ghosts of those who died there. Guided paranormal and historical tours of the location run every evening and claim to offer guests the chance to see these spirits in action. Tickets cost $39 per adult or $29 per child aged 10 to 12 and must be purchased in advance. 

South Carolina Historical Society Museum

The South Carolina Historical Society Museum is proud to be the oldest non-profit museum in the country. They are currently based in the city's historic Fireproof Building and have five permanent interactive exhibits on the floor.

There are four tours included with general admission: 

• The Magnolia House Tour, a trip through the estate home that showcases how each generation of Draytons made the space their own 
• The Aubudon Swamp Garden, a network of boardwalks that runs through the ponds and wetlands on the property 
• The Discovery Tour, a walking tour of the plantation grounds led by trained volunteer guides

LePrince Fine Art Gallery

LePrince Fine Art Gallery was founded 15 years ago by Charleston artist Kevin LePrince to serve as a showcase for his popular Lowcountry landscape paintings. The space has since expanded to display works from more than a dozen creators that LePrince calls "strong mark makers"—artists who use distinctive brush strokes, pencil strokes, or sculpted linework to add depth and expressiveness to their pieces. 

The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays. It's free to visit, and you might just catch LePrince himself painting there during your tour. 

The Gibbes Museum of Art 

Address: 135 Meeting St., Charleston, SC 29401 

When The Gibbes Museum of Art first opened in 1905, they had just 500 pieces to their name. There are now more than 10,000 works in their permanent collection, including one of the most comprehensive collections of miniatures (watercolor portraits painted on ivory disks) in the country.  

Two special exhibitions will also be on display here this February: 

• Revelations: The Art of Leo Twiggs, a collection of works by South Carolina Batik artist Leo Twiggs
• Rodin: All the Truth of Nature, a collection of 14 bronze sculptures by famed French sculptor Auguste Rodin that is set to open on February 27th

Tickets cost $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and students, and $10 for kids aged 8 to 17. Members of the military can buy adult tickets for $12 with ID. Kids aged 7 and under get in for free. If you have a Bank of America credit or debit card, you can visit for free during the first full weekend of every month, February included.  

Robert Lange Studios 

Address: 2 Queen St., Charleston, SC 29401 

Frequently mentioned as one of the best art galleries in the city, Robert Lange Studios is a must-see attraction for any Charleston art fan.

Proprietors Robert and Megan Lange are both active contemporary artists and frequent contributors to the gallery's exhibits. They host works by dozens of other talented artists, some of whom travel hundreds of miles for the opportunity.

That's not the only thing that makes this place so special, though. They also offer: 

• Three active studios where you can watch contributing artists work 
• Interactive exhibits meant to spark imagination and creativity 
• Special opening night events for new works on the first Friday of every month 
• One free sketchbook for every child who visits 

The gallery is open for regular visits from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day except Wednesdays. It's free to enter, and guests of all ages are welcome. 

Atrium Art Gallery

Atrium Art Gallery has been a major player in Charleston's abstract contemporary art scene for over a decade. Every one of their current featured artists is an award-winning talent whose works are sure to capture your imagination.  

Step into their brightly lit display space to discover works by creators like:  

• John Townsend, the gallery's owner and a frequent contributor of high-impact mixed media collages 
• Charlotte Foust, a national treasure with colorful acrylic works displayed in many museums across the country

Grand Bohemian Gallery

There's no such thing as sterile or minimalist art at the Grand Bohemian Gallery. Located inside the lobby of downtown Charleston's luxurious Grand Bohemian Hotel, this space is filled with colorful paintings and sculptures that dare you to rediscover the wonder in the world around you. There are even a few jewelry exhibits on display and a handful of works from hotel owner Richard Kessler's private collection hanging on the walls.  

The gallery is open every day from 10 a.m.to 6 p.m. Admission is free, even for folks who aren't staying at the hotel. Enter the building through the large King Street doors; the staff will point you in the right direction from there.

Holiday Festival of Lights

Undoubtedly Charleston's most popular holiday attraction, the Holiday Festival of Lights is back at James Island County Park. A large chunk of the 600-acre park has been temporarily converted into a drive-through light display featuring more than 750 glittering set pieces for families to enjoy. After cruising through, walk into Santa's Village to find:  

• A bonfire for roasting marshmallows 
• Interactive glowing Christmas trees 
• A massive holiday sand sculpture 
• A station for visits with Santa
• A workshop where kids can stuff their own plush reindeer 
• Gift and sweet shops 
• A climbing wall ($4 for two climbs) 
• Train rides through the festival grounds ($5 per person) 
• A carousel ($2 per person) 

You can visit the festival from 5:30 PM to 10 PM every evening until December 31st – yes, including Christmas Day! Admission costs as little as $15 per car if you visit on a quieter night and purchase your ticket in advance. Some activities cost extra, though, so don't forget your wallet.  

City of Charleston Holiday Parade

The City of Charleston's annual Holiday Parade will be marching around the city's downtown core on December 7th. The procession of floats and performers will start at the corner of Rutledge Avenue and Broad Street at 3 PM, traveling down Broad Street before turning north onto Meeting Street. From there, they'll head all the way up to Marion Square, where a festive celebration awaits.  

Guests can enjoy live holiday music and seasonal games and activities while waiting for the big moment: the first official lighting of the city's technicolor Christmas tree at 6 PM. As the clock ticks down, the mayor will lead the crowd in a countdown cheer. Be sure to take some snapshots when the tree finally lights up in downtown Charleston! 

Aquarium Aglow 

Address: 100 Aquarium Wharf, Charleston, SC 29401 

You'll never see holiday lights the same way again after visiting the South Carolina Aquarium's after-hours Aquarium Aglow event. Come see the facility's incredible sea creature light sculptures, watch the fish and turtles swim around neon-lit exhibits, and take festive photos against awe-inspiring backdrops. You might even spot the aquarium's famous Scuba Claus swimming through some of the tanks.  

The attraction will be open from 5:30 PM to 9 PM on December 4th to 7th and again on December 11th to December 30th, with an extra-special celebration planned for New Year's Eve. Value tickets are available on off-peak days and cost $25.95 per adult or $21.95 per child. Standard admission is $29.95 per adult or $24.95 per child.  

Cookies with Santa at Magnolia Plantation 

Address: 3550 Ashley River Road, Charleston, SC, 29414 

Make some holiday magic with the kids in your life at Cookies with Santa, a special one-day event at Charleston's historic Magnolia Plantation. Sitting on the Great Lawn in front of the manor house, you and the little ones will create one-of-a-kind holiday crafts and enjoy some hot cocoa and cookies with Kris Kringle himself.  

Santa will be at the plantation on December 6th from 1 PM to 3 PM, but guests are free to enjoy the grounds, take guided tours of Magnolia Home, and browse the gift shop until closing time at 5 PM. Tickets cost $32 for adults, $29 for seniors and military members, and $16 for kids aged 5 to 13. Kids under five can visit for free.   

Spread the Joy

Spread the Joy started a few years back when city officials decided to take an unconventional approach to spreading holiday cheer. They erected several massive metal "Joy" signs around town, replacing the "o" in the word with a stylized pineapple to tie the design back to Charleston's unique culture and roots. They then invited city residents to snap selfies with them for social media under the hashtag #spreadthejoy.  

2025's event offers triple the photo opportunities with a new set of "Hope" and "Love" signs. You'll find them at noteworthy landmarks around town, including: 

• Boone Hall 
• Charleston Gaillard Center 
• Charleston Visitor Center 
• Mt. Pleasant Visitor Center 
• Charleston International Airport

One of the Lowcountry's most beloved holiday traditions returns with the Mount Pleasant Christmas Light Parade, a spectacular evening filled with lights, music, and coastal charm. 

The event begins with a high-energy tree lighting and a fireworks display at 5:30 PM, setting the tone for a night of festive celebration. Once the parade kicks off, spectators can enjoy dozens of creative entries shimmering with holiday spirit as they move down the parade route.

The parade is free to attend and is scheduled for December 14th, but arrive early—traffic closures along Coleman Boulevard and the event's immense popularity can make parking and seating competitive.
